- Extreme engine temperature can cause the coolant to boil and burn resulting in the black residue,
- Bad head gasket may be leaking oil in the coolant resulting in an oily residue,
- Bad water pump may not circulate the coolant effectively causing the coolant to overhead and turn black.
Is the overflow tank close to the rear of the exhaust manifold?
Has the engine heated pulling a long grade?
Does the engine run hot?
Using a hand thermal temp unit, is the engine much hotter in the rear?
