Vaughn, Oooo good things to check, but I don't think any of them come up positive.
- The engine hasn't overheated
- I just tested for a combustion leak into the coolant and found no indication of a leak.
- I don’t think the waterpump is bad (temp gage shows a very steady temp around 180 F)
- The overflow tank is on the firewall and away from the exhaust manifold. Also, I find the goo in the filler tube of the radiator as well as in the tank.
- The engine has gotten hot on a long grade with a heavy load, but not enough to boil the anti-freeze/anti-boil solution in the coolant.
- Temp gage shows a very steady temp around 180 F.
- I haven’t tried a hand thermal unit to check temperatures around the block. I’ll try that tomorrow. I expect temps are pretty uniform as the water distribution tube was in terrific shape when I pulled it a couple of years ago.
