Ok,did you have the cable off the starter?
It should be foot operated.
Obviously your shorted to ground either by
Loosing a fiber insulator on the stud or
Somewhere it's shorted.
Hard to diagnose with not know what you have
done, or removed.

I've read all your post and still can't visualize what you've done.
