Dave,

Heat is your friend on freeing a stuck valve. You are right to look for a solution before tearing into the engine, broken studs, stuck bolts, cost of parts, etc.

I suggest you try this before pulling the head:

Run the engine as is with the stuck valve. Find a fast idle setting that will keep the engine running for a good 1/2 hour or so to generate heat in the coolant and block. After doing so, you might find the stuck valve will be easier to free up.. if you are able to move the valve by tapping it down thru a spark plug hole, or prying it down from below, you will likely need to keep repeating the process while spraying oil on the stem and valve guide. With some patience, you should be able to fix the stuck valve without tearing into the engine and likely having a domino effect of more problems during disassembly.

It’s worth a try, and won’t hurt anything to run it with a stuck valve, assuming the valve is stuck in the open position.
