I am following this with much interest. My 48 Power Wagon with 6 volt positive ground system has a similar problem. I don't want to hijack your post but will try out the troubleshooting here one of these days. I will add that checking the voltage with a test light may not show up a problem I had on a different Dodge truck with 6 volt positive ground. The original amp meter was dropping around 2 volts so only 4V was reaching the Coil. Installed another amp meter and it started right up.
