The only thing that is truly "safe" is a wire transfer. With cash you can run the risk of counterfit. Personal checks, bank checks, money orders(postal included) can ALL have stop payments put on them. If you don't believe me, ask someone at your bank. What I did with an out of state purchase was to set up the wire transfer ahead of time and put a hold on it. Then, once there and everything was correct, I called the bank and had them "release" it. The issue you can have is that these transactions are made once an hour so there can be a wait involved.
Once it is sent, the person receiving the funds will have to call their bank to make sure the funds are in the account. This method is the only safe way I know of. It's a hassle for sure but in this day an age, you have to spend the time to avoid the crime.
