Wellll...I have to assume that the factory service manual was meant to be used by the dealership's mechanics. So, if they pulled a set off the shelf, and they could not get good tooth contact out of it, they would have to pull/order another and hopefully the dealership would not have to absorb the cost.

I am pretty sure that new aftermarket sets produced "today" were not MoPar "factory approved" back then....

Yeah, proof could be difficult today.

Here is a trick I use when taking possibly better gears out of a parts truck and setting them up in my current trucks. I pull the whole third member out of the front housing of the parts truck and assemble it into the rear housing of the truck I am working on. And, the rear from the parts truck into the front of the one I am working on.

Chances are that those old gears have gotten most of their wear from driving forward over the years. The reverse side of the gears usually did not see the amount of use.

It has worked for me so far. I have never not been able to get good tooth contact on the "reverse" side that I am now using to propel the truck forward.
