Here is what I was told years ago by a mechanic who had years and years of experience with Power-Wagon differentials. He said, "If you can't get correct tooth pattern, the only thing you can do is try a different ring and pinion set as they are always a matched set and the pinion cannot be shimmed."
Basically the authors of the manuals were just showing the correct tooth pattern. They just were not going one step further and saying that you had to try another gear set if the first one would not get you to the correct pattern.
It seems like I saw this spelled out better in a manual at one time also.
