With the wheel off the ground and the inspection covers removed, turn the cam adjusters so that a 0.006-inch feeler gauge is a snug fit between the upper end (toe) of each brakeshoe lining and drum. 2. Turn the anchor bolts (bottom bolts) inward (towards axle) to decrease the clearance between the lower end (heel) of the brakeshoe lining and the drum to 0.006-inch. This will cause the brakeshoe to move down and out, increasing the clearance at the toe of the lining to approximately 0.012-inch, resulting in proper centralization of the brakeshoe. 3. Hold the achor bolts and tighten both anchor bolt nuts to 90-110 pound-feet torque after completing the adjustment. FFPW Inside diameter of new brake drum is 14.155 to 14.165, max wear limit is 14.220 GROUP 4 - CLUTCH ***********************************VC/VF/WC******WC3/4********WC1.5******WDX******B1-3*****C1-4****W300****W300M***WM300*****M37/M37B1/M43** HOUSING * * * * * * * * Housing Pan * * * * * * * * * Pan Dust Seal Plate * * * * * * * * * CLUTCH Release Fork * * * * * * * * * Flange * * * * * * * * * * Bushings * * * * * * * * * * Clucth Operating Lever * * * * * * * * Clucth Release Bearing * * * * * * * * * * Sleeve * * * * * * * * * * Bearing Pull Back Spring * * * * * * * * * * 10" Clutch Cover & Pressure Plate * * * * * * * * * 10" Clutch Disk * * * * * * * * * 11" Clutch Disk * 11" Clutch Cover & Pressure Plate * CLUTCH and RELATED PARTS (230) Clutch Cover Assembly (10"-10 Splines-1D) ----- Perfection Clutch# - CA1864, NAPA# 1647 Clutch Disk (10"-10 Splines-1D) ----- Perfection Clutch# - RCF319 Clutch Release Bearing Assembly --------------- Perfection Clutch# - N1313 (Bearing and Sleeve Assembly) Clutch Release Bearing ------------------------ SKF# - N1087, Timken# - 2065, NAPA# 1087 Clutch Pilot Bearing (Crankshaft) ------------- SKF# - B286, BCA# - PB286HD Flywheel Ring Gear, 146 Tooth, CC# 1138903, Pioneer# FRG146XF (6V & 12V), NAPA# 6003010 CLUTCH and RELATED PARTS (251) Clutch Cover Assembly (11"-10 Splines-1D) ----- Perfection Clutch# - CA1447 Clutch Cover Assembly (11"-10 Splines-1-3/8D) - Perfection Clutch# - CA1433 Clutch Disk (11"-10 Splines-1D) ----- Perfection Clutch# - RCF497 Clutch Disk (11"-10 Splines-1-3/8D) - Perfection Clutch# - RCF441 Clutch Release Bearing Assembly --------------- SKF# - N1459 Clutch Release Bearing ------------------------ NAPA# - N1087, Timken# - 2065 Clutch Pilot Bearing (Crankshaft) ------------- SKF# - B286, BCA# - PB286HD CLUTCH and RELATED PARTS (315) Clutch Cover Assembly (11"-10 Splines-1D) ----- Perfection Clutch# - CA1433 Clutch Disk (11"-10 Splines-1D) ----- Perfection Clutch# - RCF497 Clutch Release Bearing Assembly --------------- NAPA# - N1313 Clutch Release Bearing ------------------------ NAPA# - N1087, Timken# - 2065 Clutch Pilot Bearing (Crankshaft) ------------- SKF# - B286, BCA# - PB286HD 1 inch Clutch Alignment Tool - Autozone #20, Pioneer# TAT-5349 GROUP 5 - ENGINE ***********************************VC/VF/WC******WC3/4********WC1.5******WDX******B1-3*****C1-4****W300****W300M***WM300*****M37/M37B1/M43** RUBBER INSULATORS Front * * * * * * * * * * Rear Upper * * * * * * * * * Rear Lower * * * * * * * * * L6 3.8L 230ci - Pioneer# 602018 - Center Front L6 3.8L 230ci - Pioneer# 602014 - Upper Left/Right GROUP 6 - PROPELLER SHAFT/U-JOINT ***********************************VC/VF/WC******WC3/4********WC1.5******WDX******B1-3*****C1-4****W300****W300M***WM300*****M37/M37B1/M43** INTERMEDIATE SHAFT * * * * * * * * FRONT/REAR PROPELLER SHAFTS * * * * * * * * INTERMEDIATE SHAFT – NAPA# PUJ304 , Precision# 304, Neapco# 3-0056, AutoZone# 3-0056DL(3” Inside Lockup x 1.232” Brg. His gas tank sealer is approved for automotive as well as aircraft. It's resistant to all fuels, even the oxygenated stuff in CA. The one to use is the Alcohol resistant sealer, product# GTS-05. You'll only need a quart to do the job on an 18-gallon tank. Don't have your tank hot dipped. The chemicals will eat off the inside OEM coating, instead use his Gas Tank Etch product# TE-01 for preparing the tank for the coating. You'll need some tennis balls with duck tape to seal the holes once the sealer is inside for sloshing around. Use a pice of wire 1/16 thick (minimum) and 8 inches long. 2. Hold one end of wire aginst screw head in regulator "BAT" terminal. 3. Touch other end of wire to screw head in regulator terminal marked "ARM" for a maximum of 2 seconds. CAUTION do not touch the "FLD" or anf meatal part with the wire. To determine if generator is working: 1. With the engine at a fast idle, and using a piece of 1/16 inch wire, hold one end on the "A" terminal of the generator and touch the other end to a ground. There show be a spark, if not generator is not working. To determine if regulator is working: Test with engine at a fast idle. 1. Disconnect the wire from the "BAT" terminal and connect in an ammeter that will read 0-50 amps. GROUNDED FIELD CIRCUIT - Disconnect the "F" terminal wire from the regulator. This opens the field circuit and the output should normally drop to zero. If the output does not drop to zero, the generator field circuit is grounded either inside the generator frame or the wiring harness. To determine where the ground is, remove the lead from the generator field terminal. If the output fails to drop to zero, the field coils are grounded. If the output drops off, the ground is in the wiring harness. POOR GROUND AT REGULATOR With all wires in normal connected condition, and using the ammeter, connect one lead between the regulator base and one lead on the generator frame. If output changes, there is a ground between the generator frame and regulator base. //////////////////////////////////////////////////// GROUP 17 - ELECTRICAL IGNITION UNITS ////////////////////////////////////////////////// Caps 6 volts SMP# AL-96 (1940-41) Distributors-IGC, 6 Volts SMP# AL-96 (1941-56) Distributors-IGC, IGS, 6 Volts SMP# AL-138 (1941-56) Distributors-IAY 12 Volts SMP# AL-130 (1955-?) Using a test light, place one lead wire on the "AM" terminal of the ignition switch and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad wire or connection at ammeter. Clean/replace, retest. 2. Turn on ignition switch for remainder of testing in steps 2-7. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the “I” or "IG" terminal of the ignition switch and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad switch. Replace ignition switch. 3. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the "-" or “+“ terminal of the coil depending if you have a 6V or 12V system and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad wire or connection at the “I” or "IG" terminal of the ignition switch. Clean/replace, retest. 4. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the "+" or “-“, terminal of the coil, depending if you have a 6V or 12V system, and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad coil. Replace coil. 5. Using a test light, place one lead wire on the distributor terminal and the other lead wire to ground - no light - bad wire or connection. Clean/replace, retest. 6. With the distributor points open, using a test light, place one lead wire on the arm of the point and the other lead wire to ground - no light – grounded terminal in distributor. Clean/replace insulation material, retest. 7. With the distributor points closed, and a thick piece of paper between the points, using a test light, place one lead wire on the arm of the point and the other lead wire to ground - if light – bad points. Replace points and condenser. As a general rule, the best fuel economy is found running a engine at 65-85% of the max.hp rated RPMs which is usually around 3600 rpms for max.hp. So 70-75% of that is around 2500-2700 rpms. STARTER REPAIR/PARTS Company Name is S & W Starter & Alternator. These are very simple devices that are often real time savers. Other than the amperage rating of the diode, there are only three basic things to remember: 1. Cathode (side of the strip) 2. Anode (side without the strip) 3. Anytime the cathode is more positive than the anode, no current will flow. ---------------- | | | ----------| Diode | |------------ Anode | | | Cathode ---------------- Radio Shack Diode# 276-1101 FUSE BLOCK Suggested Wiring --------------- | | >-.--5+ AMP Fuse--.-->----.Radio | | | ---From Ignition Switch ACC Terminal->--.--.--30 AMP Fuse--.--.->--.Light Switch.- | | | Tail Lights.---<---.--10 AMP Fuse--.-----------------<---- | | | Park Lights.---<---.--10 AMP Fuse--.-----------------<---- | | | Pannel Lights.---<---.Pannel Light Switch--.--10 AMP Fuse--.-----------------<---- | | | Head lights.---<---.--15 AMP Fuse--.-----------------<---- | | | | ---From Ignition Switch IGN Terminal->--.--.--10 AMP Fuse--.-->----.Safety Switch.---.Fuel Pump | | | |--.--10 AMP Fuse--.-->----.Heater | | | --.--15 AMP Fuse--.-->----.Wiper Motors | | | | | | --------------- LIGHT SWITCH Ground | Pannel Lights | ---.-- -- Ground |Pannel|__| | | |Switch| | | Tail Lights ---.-- -- . | | | | ---|-----------------------|----- | . . | -- | | | | From FUSE BLOCK---->-----------[.30 AMP Fuse or Solid Steel Rod]|----| | | | | | | . . | -- ---|-----------------------|--- | | | | . ------.------ Parking Lights |Dimmer Switch| | --.-------.-- Ground | | . . You have to use some parts off the 230 to use the 225 distributor in the 230 engine] Conversion - All of the internal parts of the 230 distributor will drop right into the 225 housing. The most difficult task will be to take off the internal snap ring inside the shaft under the rotor cap. The 225 housing will need to be machined down about 1/32 of an inch in order for it to fit into the 230 block hole. You can have this done at a local machine shop, or do it with shop cloth using the "shoe shine" method of sanding. You will need to also swap the 230 clamp to the 225 distributor. You can now convert this distributor to an electronic with parts from an appropriate vehicle or a Mopar Performance kit. When replacing a distributor, do the timing off the number "1" cylinder by water pump. There are markings on the crankshaft pulley and an arrow off the timing chain cover to time it properly (TDC). Align the pulley’s “0” or longest center tick mark with the end point of the arrow. If you look at the bottom of the cap, you will see the raised notch. Rotate that notch to 6 o'clock. Count two posts clockwise, the second post is for the number one spark plug wire. Position your distributor to line up with the second post. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. After you start the engine, time it to 2 degrees ATDC (after top dead center) by using a timing light or a radio. Radio – Rotate the engine to 2 degrees ATDC. Tune your radio to a blank channel where you hear only noise. Place the radio close to the distributor; rotate the distributor until you hear a pop. That will be the points opening and you will be timed. Lock the distributor. CAR ENGINE PART INTERCHANGE When looking for parts from cars that use a flat head 6 cylinder engine that will directly interchange with the PW 230 engine, these parts will: - Camshaft from 49-57 (Plymouth) - Crankshaft from 49-57 (Plymouth) - Flywheel from 49-57 (Plymouth) - Flywheel ring gear from 49-56 (Chrysler, Studebaker, Plymouth) - Engine Block from 49-53 (Dodge) - Oil Pump from 49-57 (Chrysler, Studebaker, Plymouth) - Water Pump up-to-engine T137-21560 from 49-50 (Chrysler, Studebaker, Plymouth) - Water Pump after-engine T137-21560 from 55-56 (Plymouth) For those of you that may need to replace your muffler with an inexpensive muffler that is norrow and a bolt on application, here are the part#'s for Kragen - Flow Tech High Perfomance Glass Pack Muffler# 50250FLT - $22.99 - Hanger# 518001 - $3.99 - Adapter/Flange# - 548754 $7.49 - 2-1/8 Clamp# 517218 $2.49 - 2-1/4 Clamp# 517214 $2.49 Overall length of the muffler is 22 inches and slips right over the stock exhaust pipe. Adapter/Flange is about a 70 degree angle so you can direct the exhaust towards the side of the truck. Use high temp silicone seal for exhaust systems to coat inside of muffler/outside of exhaust pipe. This prevents the two from rusting together for easy take off later. Truck has a nice sound with this application. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// GROUP 23 - OIL FILTERS //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Car Quest BALDWIN# WIX# FRAM# NAPA# PUROLATOR# HASTINGS# 1/2 Ton Early WW2 Dodge P67 N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A 1/2 Ton Late, 3/4 Ton P53 51100 C4P 1100 L20051 LF373 [Can Type Replaceable Element w/Pull-Out Bail Handle] M37 Purolator Cannister# 26708, Element# 38733 51100 Deluxe Cannister# DX-1368-20, Element# 1271101 51100 Fram Cannister# 5310-2, Element# 5625 51100 1946-60 Civilian Power Wagon (230) P73 51080 C134PL 1080 L30001 LF128 [Can Type Replaceable Element w/Pull-Out Bail Handle] 85011 JC405 51011 C12OE 1011 N/A LF501 [Sock Type Replaceable Element w/Pull-Out Bail Handle] 1961-68 Civilian Power Wagon (251) P73 51080 C134PL 1080 L30001 LF128 [Can Type Replaceable Element w/Pull-Out Bail Handle] JC405 51011 C12OE 1011 N/A LF501 [Sock Type Replaceable Element w/Pull-Out Bail Handle] (265) P60 51062 CH192PL 1062 L40082 LF309 Fram C4, Wix 51006 (Standard Military Filter) Oil Pan Drain Plug Gasket 7/8 I.D. or 22MM I.D. FRONT WHEEL SHAKE Basically start at the steering wheel and work downward from there. There are some simple tasks to make sure that your steering system and front end is tight. Any slop in the front end will be accentuated by the large tires that these trucks have and a slight unbalance can really set things off. Here is a list to check 1) Steering wheel nut tight 2) Steer box to frame bolts tight. 3) Steering box adjusted correctly No slop. 4) Steering Gear Arm (Pitman) to steering box bolt tight and no movement between two. 5) Drag link ends tight and adjusted properly. 6) Check 4 bolts that connect steering arm to knuckle. 7) Check Knuckle Trunnion Pin Bearings/Upper Bronze Bushings. Adjust with shims and replace worn parts. Both right and left side. 8) Check Tie Rod Ends each side of the tie rod for play. Make sure bolts are tight. 9) Check wheel bearings making sure that there is no slop. Be sure to also check brake backing plate bolts. 10) Check spring shackles and all bushings and pins. Wear in these can cause slop in the front end and allow a slight tire imbalance to become quite intense. 11) Check tire balance. 12) Check tire inflation. 13) Check for tire roundness especially in bias ply tires. Cold bias ply tires will quickly show any slop in you front end/steering. The key point is to get your front end nice and tight and remove all the slop from the system. Obviously your tires need to be balanced and somewhat true. Even with well balanced tires if the front end has sloppy imperfections, the road can set up a shimmy/vibration in the front end which you will feel. Trucks with the 4.89's came with the the smaller 7.50 tires AND the narrow 5.5" wheels. The wheels make the easiest quick visual reference, as there is about 1" of brake drum showing towards the inside when you look at them head on. The trucks with 5.83's came with 9.00 tires on the wider 6.5 wheels, and they just about cover the brake drum completely when viewed head on. This is not a positive identification of the gears in the axles, but can be used as a quick reference.
