With the wheel off the ground and the inspection covers removed, turn the cam adjusters so that a 0.006-inch feeler gauge is a snug fit between the upper end (toe) of each brakeshoe lining and drum. 2. Turn the anchor bolts (bottom bolts) inward (towards axle) to decrease the clearance between the lower end (heel) of the brakeshoe lining and the drum to 0.006-inch. This will cause the brakeshoe to move down and out, increasing the clearance at the toe of the lining to approximately 0.012-inch, resulting in proper centralization of the brakeshoe. 3. Hold the achor bolts and tighten both anchor bolt nuts to 90-110 pound-feet torque after completing the adjustment. Rear Spring Pin Removal - Welded a large nut to a 1/8n.p.t. pipe plug (this is the same thread as the grease nipple). Screw the plug into the pin and use a slide hammer to pull on the nut. Another method is to use a 8 grade fine thread 3/8ths bolt about 6" inches long and some 7/8 I.D. steel pipe cut to 1.5 and 3 inch lengths and 3/8 fender washers and nut. You will have to cut threads up the bolt. Screw on nut to head of bolt, remove the grease fitting from spring pin and slip on several washers, then pipe and screw bolt into spring pin and seat. Align pipe over pin before turning nut while holding bolt head to pull out pin. Some pins may be rusted and will resist pulling, so you might need to hit the pin using a hammer and brass rod to loosen it up. Use 10-32x1/4 flat head Phillip screws for the sides, top and round head Phillips for the regulator; 5. Use an anti-seize lubricant on re-assembly. Use glass setting tape (1/32) rubber material that goes around glass edge prior to placing into windshield frame (Channel 3/8Dx5/16W). You can also apply a thing layer of silicone seal between glass and frame on outside to give it an extra seal to keep water out of the frame. BED INTERCHANGES -- You can modify a 9-foot bed by cutting 7-5/16" off front and 5-11/16" off the rear. You also need to shorten and re-bend the forward lower area of the sides to clear the running boards. Re-attach the stake pockets. Fill in any extra fender holes. The under bed steel supports are a bit different (lighter duty) but workable. A similar modification can be said for second series boxes from 1 ton 2x4's. TAILGATE INTERCHANGES -- Look for any Utiline fenderside Dodge with a 54" wide tailgate. It is the only one with a center hinge. It is the most common tailgate found on the following 2wd's:'48-'60 1 tons, '54-'60 3/4 tons, all '61-'71 1/2, 3/4, 1 tons. The tailgate was used up to the middle 80's without the Dodge embossed in. BRONZE BUSHING REMOVAL Method 1 - The bronze bushings and inner seals fit a 1&1/4 NPT pipe tap. Simply drive the tap in with an impact wrench. Remove the tap and insert a 1&1/4 nipple and cap. Attach the cap to your slide hammer and out they come. Don't drive the tap in too far when removing the seal or you may damage the retaining lip. Method 2 - Get a threaded 1/2" rod at least 24" long. Next, weld or double nut one end so the nut(s)can't turn on shaft. Insert rod with nut(s) on end into axle tube through bronze bushing. Take a 3/4" drive socket (must be 3/4" drive so 1/2" threaded rod will fit through rachet end) with a near 1.5" o.d. and slide it down the rod past the bushing to the nut. Have a 3/8" or thicker plate with a hole slightly larger than 1/2" for the rod to go through to lay against the steering knuckle flange (use a really big washer). Turn the wheel about 15 degrees - so the socket cannot slide back out of the bushing, and tighten the nut on the rod end while keeping the rod from turning thus pulling the bushing out of the housing. Should the rod spin, thread a die down the threads and put a vise-grip on the rod end to hold it still while tightening the nut. Afterwards, back the die over the possibly damaged threads from the pliers so you can remove the nut and support plate from the knuckle flange. Method 3 - Buy a bushing removal tool from Vintage Power Wagons. BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTMENT/SYSTEM BLEEDING Brake Shoe Heel/Toe Adjustment: After the brake and hub assemblies have been reassembled and the hub bearings have been adjusted properly, follow these procedures, unless you have the proper tool to adjust the shoes: 1. Face the back of the brake plate and turn the Anchor bolts until the bolt’s arrow or center punch marks, point toward each other. To adjust the heel of the shoe, turn the right hand Anchor bolt counter-clockwise and the left Anchor bolt clockwise. In doing so, the heel of the shoe will move downward and outward toward the drum. 2. Looking through the drum inspection hole, place a .010 feeler gauge between the shoe and the drum shoe surface and adjust heel to .010. 3. To adjust the toe of the shoe, move the inspection hole up to the shoe’s toe. Looking through the drum inspection hole, place a .010 feeler gauge between the shoe and the drum shoe surface and adjust toe to .010. 4. Recheck the clearance of both adjustments and modify as needed. To adjust the brake shoes, the following steps should be taken with the wheel off the ground: 1. On the brake plate there are two Ύ inch nuts upper area, one on each side. Turn the front (front side of axle) brake shoe cam adjusting nut out (counter clockwise when facing wheel (driver side), or clockwise when facing brake plate) until wheel is locked, then back off until the wheel will spin; 2. Turn the cam for the rear shoe out (clockwise when facing wheel or counter clockwise when facing brake plate) until wheel is locked, then back off until wheel will spin; 3. Reverse for passenger side. Bleeding Brake System 1. When bleeding start with rear passenger side wheel, then rear driver side, then front passenger then front driver side as final. It is a good practice to bleed the system when adjusting the shoes to remove moisture at the cylinders. 2. Repeat until air is out, BUT MAKE SURE YOUR ARE CHECKING MASTER CYLINDER FLUID LEVEL FREQUENTLY DURING PROCESS to avoid pumping air into brake system. Note! Adjust brakes, then bleed! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// GROUP 14 - COOLING ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////// FAN BELTS WC 6V - [CC# 1191449] Gates# TR24476 (Military Spec. On one end sharpen to a chisel point parallel with the flat side of rod. This will be used for driving in and breaking loose the water distributor tube from the block's walls. From the chisel end, measure up the rod 23 inches. This is as far as you want to drive in the rod. Once you start driving, you will feel resistance at each rust lock point. Keep driving until you have broken through, then turn the rod 90 degrees to the right, back to starting point and then to the left 90 degrees for a full 180 degrees, and back to starting point. Do this on both sides of tube. Using a 1/8 inch wire, bend a "V" shape hook at one end with about 4 inches on one side. Stick the wire inside the tube and the 4 inch piece through the first upper slot. Pull wire out and wrap 4 inch piece around wire to lock. Wrap the other end around a rod several times, lock and pull the tube out. Disassembly: 1. Open the radiator's and driver side of engine behind the oil filler tube, the drain cocks to drain coolant. 2. Remove upper and lower radiator hose. If hoses are old, cut off by slicing parallel along hose at connection. 3. Take out the bolts that hold the radiator tie rods to the radiator side shells (both sides). 4. Take out the two front fender support bracket bolts that bolt into the radiator core support (both sides). 5. Take out the front shield bolt that bolts to the radiator side shells (both sides). 6. Take off the two nuts at bottom of radiator core support. 7. With an assistant, pull the radiator forward to take out the hood henge from it's radiator sheel support, and remove hood. 8. Make sure electrical wires are out of the way. 9. The shell, core, support assembly can now be lifted up (will be heavy) by standing on the front winch or bumper area, and your assistant will need to help when parts hang up on each other and to keep you balanced. 10. Once assembly is out, you now have access to the water pump for removal. 11. Follow instructions in parts interchange file to remove distributor tube. Tube fits in a "D" hole in block. 12. Good time to back flush radiator and replace hoses and fan belt. 13. You may want to use silicone seal on the radiator core hose connections to seal out coolant. Rubed all around connection, then pushed on hose. The connections had some good pits, so I'm trying to slow down further rusting. 14. The water pump to block gasket is available, but not the pump's cover. You will have to make that one. I twisted off two bolts removing the cover, so you can expect that. 15. You may want to replace the three bolts that hold the water pump to the block with stainless steel. 16. Use an antiseeze compond on all bolts 17. Reassemble in reverse order. SMP PS-135 is a good choice. This switch will ensure that the electric fuel pump will not work unless the engine has oil pressure. It will prevent the pump from running in a situation where the motor may stall with the ignition ON. See Electrical Wiring section. His gas tank sealer is approved for automotive as well as aircraft. It's resistant to all fuels, even the oxygenated stuff in CA. The one to use is the Alcohol resistant sealer, product# GTS-05. You'll only need a quart to do the job on an 18-gallon tank. Don't have your tank hot dipped. STARTERS 6V Starter Prestolite# MAW-4032 12V Prestolite# MDG-6003 CHARGING SYSTEM TESTS Polarizing the charging system: 1. Use a pice of wire 1/16 thick (minimum) and 8 inches long. 2. Hold one end of wire aginst screw head in regulator "BAT" terminal. 3. Touch other end of wire to screw head in regulator terminal marked "ARM" for a maximum of 2 seconds. CAUTION do not touch the "FLD" or anf meatal part with the wire. To determine if generator is working: 1. With the engine at a fast idle, and using a piece of 1/16 inch wire, hold one end on the "A" terminal of the generator and touch the other end to a ground. There show be a spark, if not generator is not working. To determine if regulator is working: Test with engine at a fast idle. 1. Disconnect the wire from the "BAT" terminal and connect in an ammeter that will read 0-50 amps. GROUNDED FIELD CIRCUIT - Disconnect the "F" terminal wire from the regulator. This opens the field circuit and the output should normally drop to zero. If the output does not drop to zero, the generator field circuit is grounded either inside the generator frame or the wiring harness. To determine where the ground is, remove the lead from the generator field terminal. If the output fails to drop to zero, the field coils are grounded. If the output drops off, the ground is in the wiring harness. POOR GROUND AT REGULATOR With all wires in normal connected condition, and using the ammeter, connect one lead between the regulator base and one lead on the generator frame. If output changes, there is a ground between the generator frame and regulator base. //////////////////////////////////////////////////// GROUP 17 - ELECTRICAL IGNITION UNITS ////////////////////////////////////////////////// Caps 6 Volts SMP# AL-96 (1941-56) Distributors-IGC, IGS, 6 Volts SMP# AL-138 (1941-56) Distributors-IAY 12 Volts SMP# AL-130 (1955-?) You have to use some parts off the 230 to use the 225 distributor in the 230 engine] Conversion - All of the internal parts of the 230 distributor will drop right into the 225 housing. The most difficult task will be to take off the internal snap ring inside the shaft under the rotor cap. The 225 housing will need to be machined down about 1/32 of an inch in order for it to fit into the 230 block hole. You can have this done at a local machine shop, or do it with shop cloth using the "shoe shine" method of sanding. You will need to also swap the 230 clamp to the 225 distributor. You can now convert this distributor to an electronic with parts from an appropriate vehicle or a Mopar Performance kit. When replacing a distributor, do the timing off the number "1" cylinder by water pump. There are markings on the crankshaft pulley and an arrow off the timing chain cover to time it properly (TDC). Align the pulley’s “0” or longest center tick mark with the end point of the arrow. If you look at the bottom of the cap, you will see the raised notch. Rotate that notch to 6 o'clock. Count two posts clockwise, the second post is for the number one spark plug wire. Position your distributor to line up with the second post. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. After you start the engine, time it to 2 degrees ATDC (after top dead center) by using a timing light or a radio. Radio – Rotate the engine to 2 degrees ATDC. Tune your radio to a blank channel where you hear only noise. Place the radio close to the distributor; rotate the distributor until you hear a pop. That will be the points opening and you will be timed. Lock the distributor.
