What do you do for a living?

I ask, becuase a lot of guys who post here seem to live way out in the country, and I am Envious! I just wonder what you all do for work, to be able to live away from a big city, and still support your hobby too.

I live in Dallas area, becuase its one of the "high Tech" areas of the country, that has work for us Telecom Engineer types. (I am a Mechanical Engineer)

I dont have the option of living way out in the county, as most Telecom companies are centered around big cities.

Sure wish I could though!

I need to change my line of work so I can live where I want to again! And still have a job where I can afford my trucks!

Let's see, Where do I start? Live in western PA. Former Navy Radioman aboard USS WASP)(CVS-18) back in the '60's. Did recoveries of Gemini astronauts (pre-Appolo). Was in on first live TV coverage(B&W) of splashdown. Been Journeyman Mouldmaker for Owens-Illinois Glass Container for 38 years. Was "retired" once but was called back when plant reopened. Been into ham radio for 42 years as K3QEQ. Used to have a '60 WM-300 that was driven to the Iowa Rally three times but foolishly sold it a few years ago--looking for a M-37 this time around. Check the Forum every day for PW's and ideas. A 2002 Dodge Dakota is as close to a ff that I get now. HI 73 de K3QEQ Bill Zavatsky

The "Motherhood" of the Brotherhood!!

Gentlemen, I grew up in Ohio. Came to Ca in '74. I've worked as a Honda MC mechanic, on and off for 12 yrs. My Career has been in new product development since I graduated-BS Biology in '73. I worked for Mead Paper (in Dayton) developing Ink Jet Printing. I came to Ca and worked for Xerox on electronic mail machines (now FAX), and then for MCA, Universal, IBM, Discovision, and Optical Disc Corp, developing the Laser Disc, CD ROM, and compact disc technology in LA. I struck out on my own in the late 80's. I worked in security, and as an EMT, and then '94-'97 as a Firefighter/EMT in San Bernadino Co. Ca (Mojave Desert), while developing my own products. Most recently, I worked for the Transportation Security Administration as a baggage screener. I was honored to finally be able to serve my country, and my job is currently under appeal.

I call Red Mountain, in the Mojave, between Edwards and China Lake and Fort Irwin, my home now, my pile (of M37's) is there. I have an acre in a remote community, surrounded by perfect M37/Flying terrain. I am temporarily in Long Beach Ca (LA) while I continue to bring my products to market.

I have those German Engeneering Genes, and I have been building new things with my hands, all my life. I am a designer. (Inventor). My avocation is Motorcycling, Flying, and Military Vehicles-ie M37's. My Profession is New Product Development.

I remain unmarried, and I care most about my products, my dog, and my M37. These are my "children".

I am passionate about both Design and M37's.
I see my goal in life, as to being sucessful as a designer, by having people vote for my products with their dollar bills.

Thank you Joe, for this wonderful Forum. And thank you Lord, for all these wonderful people.

Thanx Will Liebscher

Personally I live out but I commute to the ajoining county. I work for that county and happen to be lucky enough to have a county truck to drive(for now anyway)which saves me wear and tear and gas expense.

Some large metro areas are situated so that you are lucky enough to live out in a rural setting and still be within a 20-30 mi. range of a large metro area.

Metro areas that have experienced too large a growth and urban sprawl make this difficult and the land developers ,with their appetite to rid the land of rural property are making it even harder to live out in a rural setting and commute a reasonable distance to work in a metro area. The words hobby and collector should never have found their way into the PW vocabulary.

David N. Lundstrom

I am a Environmental Health Practitioner with a local public health unit based in Minot, ND. A fancy name for a health inspector. I design, inspect and troubleshoot onsite sewer systems. I love my work, I get to be outside, but pretty much only when I want to be! I have been a farmer, bartender, student, construction worker, truck driver and fertilizer plant manager. I have 3 wonderful kids and a wife of nearly 6 years. I drive 86 miles one way to get to work, but soon we will have our own place with 160 acres about 1 mile from my parents place where I grew up. Except for around the towns, North Dakota is very empty and land is cheap. This is a wonderful place to live.......I mean, it is terrible here, don't come here, no hunting or fishing, no wonderful views or anything like that. I have a 1949 B-1 PW with a IHC 304 V-8 in it. Old IHCs are my main obsession, but I will always have the PW.
